MESSAGE FROM MRS SALLY CHEW
BRIGADE PRESIDENT
THE GIRLS’ BRIGADE SINGAPORE


1. Today, the Girls’ Brigade is represented by some 4,000 girls in 81 primary and secondary schools in Singapore.

2. The mission of the Girls’ Brigade is to help every girl discover and develop her unique potential by equipping, empowering and enabling her to be a community leader and to be a positive influence to those around her.

3. One of the intended outcomes of the Girls’ Brigade is to imbue our girls with good moral values to become responsible and contributing citizens rendering service at home, school, community and the world. GB girls have the opportunities to participate in community projects, both locally and overseas in countries like Thailand, Cambodia, Mongolia, Philippines, Indonesia, East Timor, Nepal and Siberia where GB has established a presence.

4. The annual Low Guat Tin Challenge serves as one of the platforms to provide girls with the passion to serve the disadvantaged, both locally as well as overseas, through innovative fund raising initiatives. This year’s Challenge saw girls coming in teams composing of their parents and siblings to walk the Challenge Trail together.

5. Character development, leadership and life skill programmes remain pillars of our training curriculum to ensure our girls acquire relevant skills and knowledge to meet the challenges today.

5. This year, we launched an online National project called the “Project Values Venture”. This is a project where girls and officers participate in a collaborative and experiential programme as teams to blog, build widgets and experiment with new media to engage one another to learn, share, reflect on positive character values and decision making. There are now about 1,500 girls and officers engaged in this project and we hope to see more girls and officers involved in new ventures.

6. For the year ahead, together with more than 65 countries where the Girls’ Brigade is represented, our programmes will have an additional emphasis and it is to create opportunities to help girls step up and step out of their comfort and constraining zones. This is in line with the International Theme to “Arise, Shine … break shackles and transform lives”.

7. The International Project “The One Chance Project” launched by GB International and led by GB Singapore, remains an available platform for GB girls and officers. This includes the schools which conduct literacy and life skill programmes through the T (Transformation) Houses set up in the slums, villages and city dumps to serve the local community.

8. Today marks the first day of the GB Fortnight 2009 where we have the opportunity to share with friends, family, well-wishers and partners on how GB can make a difference in the lives of our girls. We would also like to appeal for support for the work which our grils are doing.

9. Finally, we are indeed very grateful for your support of our work amongst girls and look forward to your continued support as we seek to raise a generation of “Esthers” – girls who are better students, better citizens and better community leaders.

10. On behalf of the Girls’ Brigade Singapore, I would like to thank all principals, vice principals and teachers for their unwavering support and partnership with the Girls’ Brigade.

11. Finally, I wish all of you a happy GB Day.

Recently, we formed a team within our company to take part in this competition call Values Venture. There are some catergories, but the team came up with setting up a themed blog. And, Hooray! It was done within the time limit! :D
